CBDC News: CBDC Cumberland (Cumberland Development Corporation) Celebrates its 21st Year of Assisting Residents Start Their Own Businesses - Cumberland's Youth Retention Project has come to an end, a copy of the final report can be veiwed on the 24 Hours on the Hill Website
         umberland Development Corporation Limited was established in 1985 by a community group of individuals interested in the further economic development of Cumberland County by assisting small business startups and expansions.

        With the assistance of the Community Futures Program then managed by HRDC and now ACOA developed a Board of Directors from this group of community leaders and has never looked back. Members of the Board of Directors include: Sherman Beal(Chair), Doug Marshall(Past Chair), David Blair(Vice Chair), Karla Mundle(Treasurer), Ron Langille, Donald Jewers, Sherry Camron-Calder, Victor Bayart and Karla Milton. Executive Director Randy Smith acts as secretary for the board.

        Now in its 21st year of operation, Cumberland Development Corporation has a proud history of significantly impacting the economy of Cumberland County since its inception. It has successfully met the challenges of creating and sustaining jobs in a county that is so diverse in geography that small business entrepreneurs have unlimited opportunities in many sectors of the economy. Light manufacturing, farming, fishing, aquiculture, construction, retail, tourism, silva-culture, and the service sector have all been impacted by CDC.

        Cumberland Development Corporation serves a large geographic area in the County. From Advocate to Malagash, from Moose River to Tidnish and from the Bay of Fundy to the Northumberland Strait. The population of the county is about 33,000 with the major centers being Amherst(9,473), Springhill(4,091), Parrsboro(1,529), Oxford(1,332), and Pugwash(600).

        Cumberland Development Corporation is located in the Cumberland Economic Resource Centre in Amherst, Nova Scotia. We share the building with other development agencies such as CREDA and the Downtown Amherst Revitalization Society. HRSDC and ACOA also have small satellite offices in the building.

        Cumberland Development Corporation is a member of the Association of Community Business Development Corporations of Atlantic Canada and since 2002 began to operate under the name of CBDC Cumberland. It also may use the name Cumberland CBDC from time to time in its marketing material. The logo CBDC can be recognised throughout Atlantic Canada.
