he
Self-Employment Benefits (SEB) program is offered with
funding support from Service
Canada. It is designed to help individuals without employment
create jobs for themselves through self-employment.
Unemployed individuals
who are in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits or
who have received EI benefits in the past 3 years (5 years in
the case of maternity leave) may qualify for financial assistance
and business training to start a new business or purchase an
existing one. Certain seasonal business may not qualify for
this program.
The application
and assessment process are designed to allow you to determine
whether you are suited for self-employment. At the same time,
it allows us an opportunity to review your business skills and
ideas and evaluate the viability of the proposed business.
To receive
assistance from this program, you need to complete and submit
a certificate
of eligibility (see your local centre of Service Canada).
Then, discuss your idea with your CBDC and prepare a comprehensive
business plan or business history, including a two-year cash
flow forecast and a credit review form.
During the application
process, the Self-Employment Development Officer at your local
CBDC guides you and also analyses all your submissions in detail.
The CBDC then assesses the viability of your business plan,
considering factors such as appropriate skills, experience,
knowledge, and credit history, demand for product or service,
competition, and acceptable impact on existing businesses.
Upon approval
of your business proposal, a contract is signed for an agreed-upon
period. This contract is made between you- the applicant -
and
Service Canada, while the CBDC provides
business advice and monitors progress. Once the assistance
is approved and you have signed a contract, you work full-time
to establish your business. Meanwhile, the Self-Employment
Benefits
Program provides financial assistance, usually in the form
of income support.
At the Cumberland Development Corporation eligible candidates
will be provided with:
- Orientation Sessions- An introductory three day training
covering essentials such as: Ideas, Project Description,
Program Funding, Marketing, Forecast and Cash Flows.
- Business Workshops- Mandatory workshops covering a variety
of business related topics from advertising, bookkeeping,
Simply Accounting, networking etc.
- Counseling- We provide timely counseling to clients in
the program. This consists of bi-monthly meetings to review
Income and Expense statements and additional consulting
as required to assist with the operations, marketing, financing,
and any other relevant business requirements deemed necessary
by the client and the counselor.
